John W. Gacy Jr. was indicted Monday on another 26 counts of murder in the deaths of young men and boys he is accused of having homosexual relations with. The murder indictments handed down against Gacy by a Cook County grand jury now total 33. Only nine of the 26 victims listed in the latest indictments have been identified. In total, 17 of the 33 victims haven’t been identified. The identified bodies listed in Monday’s indictment were John S. Prestige, 20, of Kalamazoo, Michigan; Matthew V. Bowman, 19, of Crystal Lake; Russell L. Nelson, 22, of Cloquet, Minnesota and Michael Bonnin, 17, John A. Mowery, 19, William B. Carroll, 16, Robert E. Gilroy, 18, Randall Reffett, 15, and Timothy O’Rourke, 20, all of Chicago.
The previous indictments against Gacy, 37, were handed down January 8 included the death of Robert Piest, 15, of suburban Des Plaines. The youth’s disappearance on December 11th first led police to Gacy, who lived in an unincorporated area just northwest of Chicago. Piest’s body was recovered from the Illinois River April 9. Since Dec. 21, 29 decomposed bodies have been unearthed at the site of Gacy’s home and the house has been demolished in the investigation. Four bodies were found in area rivers. Sheriff’s police said Monday that they’ve completed excavation of the Gacy property. During the excavation, Gacy’s home was leveled, two driveways were torn up and his garage dismantled in the search for corpses. “As of now, there will be no more digging,” said Lt. Frank Brown of the sheriff’s police. He said police are satisfied no more bodies are on the property.
Gacy, a twice-divorced father of two children, remains in custody at the Cook County Jail hospital. He is being kept in the hospital for security reasons and because he says he has a weak heart. Gacy was scheduled to appear before Circuit Judge Louis Garippo Wednesday, when Garippo is expected to receive psychiatric examination reports on the defendant.
