Death
12 Dec 1979, Rialto, San Bernardino County, California
Tragically, John Kilpatrick is one of the victims of California serial murderer, William Bonin who was convicted of the rape, torture and murder of 14 boys and young men between 1968 and 1980. Known as “The Freeway Killer”, he was executed by lethal injection at San Quentin State Prison in 1996. Prosecutors portrayed him as “the most arch-evil person who ever existed.” Although he was found guilty of 14 murders, he confessed to 21 and is suspected of even more.
On December 12th, 1979, 15-year-old John Fredrick Kilpatrick of Long Beach left his home and was offered money for sexual services by Bonin. After engaging in mutual oral sex, Kilpatrick was bound and raped by Bonin before being transported to his parents’ house, where he was flagellated with string, and then strangled to death with it. His body was discarded near Rialto. It was found on December 13, but Kilpatrick remained known as a John Doe until August 5, 1980. Because of his troubled background, which caused him to disappear for days at a time, his mother hesitated to report the disappearance. His friends also mistakenly reported seeing him at the mall. As a result, he was not reported missing until February.
