Tragically, Michael Bauer was one of the victims of Chicago’s serial murderer, Larry Eyler who was convicted of murdering 21 young men and boys between 1982 and 1984 and sentenced to death by lethal injection, died of AIDS-related complications in 1994 while incarcerated on death row. He was known as “The Interstate Killer” as many of his victims were discovered close to the Interstate Highway and is also known to have killed an additional 20 more young men and boys.
On March 8, 1983, 18-year-old Michael Bauer’s partially decomposed body was discovered alongside an oak tree close to an abandoned farmhouse in Lake Village, Indiana. He had been dead for several months, and had been partially buried, with sections of his body remaining exposed above ground, suggesting the murderer had made only rudimentary efforts to bury his victim. Bauer was buried next to two other Caucasian victims and buried on one side of the tree, three feet apart, with their heads facing north and an African-America teenage murder victim buried at the other side of the tree. All four victims had been stabbed more than two dozen times with a blade at least eight inches in length, and the trousers of each victim were discovered around their ankles.
