War On Perverts Pledged In 1954 Purge’

This is what was said about Dade County’s pervert situation during and after the “purge” of 1954. Miami city manager: “They’ve gone underground or out of town just disappeared. This (campaign) isn’t just for a few days. This is a long-range proposition.”
Romero Shepard, Miami Beach police, chief, “We don’t want Miami’s homosexuals running over here. We’re making special plans to keep them out.’ H. Leslie Quigg, then a Miami city commissioner: “We are just opening the gates to these people when national magazines carry stories that Miami has a lenient policy toward them.”
LT. Chester Eldredge, Miami police department: “We are extremely fortunate that there have been no more violent crimes in Miami involving them (perverts).” Thomas J. Kelly, Dade County sheriff: “You can give your guests champagne and caviar and they will stay-or you can give them warm beer and they will leave. We’re going to give these undesirables the warm beer treatment.”
