Police To Harass Pervert Hangouts

The Miami Herald

Bars and night clubs catering to perverts will feel the full force of Miami police Strict orders to “arrest and rearrest” operators for every violation police can find will be issued by City Manager E A Evans The city commission will find that we will co-operate to the utmost” Evans said “I will see to it that the police throw the book at these places”

Evans returned to his desk after a Canadian vacation to find Mayor Abe Aronovitz and other members of the commission adamant on a change in police policy The mayor touched off a series of blasts last Thursday when he said he would seek removal of Evans unless there is a drastic crackdown The mayor criticized Police Chief Walter E Headley’s announced policy of allowing homosexuals to congregate in a few downtown bars “so they can be watched by police” Aronovitz called the policy an invitation for perverts to come to Miami

That policy definitely will be changed Evans said “I understand Chief Headley’s feelings” Evans said “I have been sympathetic to? some degree up until the last few weeks “He did not intend to coddle these people But he simply did not want to harass them and have them spread to bars and night clubs all over the city “If they chose to congregate In a few places and broke no laws his idea was to let them stay “If It is the thought of the city commission that this practice should be broken up it will be broken up”

The city manager said he will wait for Headley’s return from vacation to issue the orders “I do not think it ‘would be wise to act before them” he said The chief probably will have some ideas of ‘ his own’ on how we should go about this campaign I will confer with him as soon as he returns to Miami” Headley Is scheduled to get back next Tuesday.
