Public Area in 22nd St. Raid Target

In a move labeled a “crackdown on pervert hangouts,” Miami Beach police swooped down on the public bathing area at 22nd st. and the ocean Thursday and herded 35 males to headquarters for questioning. Police Chief Romeo J. Shepard, who led the flying squad of raiders, said the action was the result of “numerous complaints” that the area was becoming the congregating, place. of girls.” “males who Most of the 35 rounded up were released after questioning at headquarters. But six were booked for disorderly con• duct for failing to give a good account of themselves. Bond was set at $100. “We made the raid to serve notice that Miami Beach doesn’t want this type of individual,” Shepard said. “Maybe after a few more raids of this kind, they’ll take the hint and congregate somewhere else.”

The raid was executed with all the advance planning and secrecy of an amphibious landing. Several police cars converged behind the Beach public library, a few blocks from target scene, about 1:45 p.m. Meanwhile, Detective Jerry Kedrierski, acting as a plainclothes scout, was sizing up the situation at the beachfront. Promptly at 2 p.m. the cars raced down 21st. and 22nd sts. and slammed to a halt while scores of curious bystanders gathered to watch. Few of those grabbed for questioning made any effort to get away. But two of them dashed into the ocean, apparently figurling on ” swimming until the heat was off. But lifeguards, acting on police instructions, rounded them up. The 35 were crammed six to eight in the 1 rear of prowl cars and whisked to headquarters.

There they were questioned by teams of interrogators under direction of Detective Sgt. Henry Dworkin. Some of those rounded up wore outfits that caused snickers from police. There were abbreviated tights which were little more than pieces of cloth handkerchief size connected by thin strips of material. Some of the shorts were in such hues as shocking pink, daring cerise and a leopard pattern. Shepard said the foray was due in part to reports from Miami sources that there are an estimfated 6,000 to 8,000 perverts in the Greater Miami area. He had ordered a similar harassment raid in the same locality last November. At that time no arrests were made. The chief also hinted he has other ideas for “discouraging” perverts from congregating on the Beach. He said he plans to detail two men to a special “bathing suit patrol.” They will dress in swim garb, he said, and the beaches, noting evidence roam, misconduct on the part of perverts, and then summon uniformed officers to them. Shepard indicated he will arrest, take measures to “clean up” one or two night spots that reputedly are prime Beach after-dark hang. outs for homosexuals. In another type crackdown, Beach police arrested nine persons–six men and three womer-earlier in the day for violations of the Beach’s law banning scantely attire away from the beachfront.
