Tavern Loses its License for 30 Days

The Liquor Board yesterday suspended the license of a downtown tavern for 30 days after a board member suggested that compared to “this place, The Block is a Sunday School.” The tavern, Cicero’s Cafe, in the 500 block Forrest street near The Block, is owned by Salvatore J, Cicero and has a seven-day beer, wine and liquor license. Mr. Cicero was called before the board yesterday to explain nine cases of disorder at the tavern during the last six months of last year. Two men were stabbed, a minor was found guilty of falsify ing her age, of carrying obscene pictures and of being disorderly, and there were disorderly and assault charges brought against patrons of the tavern.

George V. Delia, who represented Mr, Cicero, questioned them, closely as did Frank J. Hanson, a Liquor Board member. Lt. William Klump, when asked about the tavern’s patrons, said they were mostly “hutches, dykes and ferns” who “hang in there,” When Mr, Delia’s eyebrows raised slightly at these terms, Mr. Hanson told him: “These men know their way around, Senator. They are terms for different types of lesbians or female homosexuals.'” “I am certainly getting an education today,”
