Mayor Abe Aronovitz declared this afternoon he was sick of Police Chief Walter Headley’s “tender treatment of perverts and intends to fire City Manager E. A. if he cannot straighten Headely out. Aronovitz said he will give Evans just one week from the time he gets back from vacation to clean out pervert nests in Miami proper. If Headley, who also is on vacation, refuses to cooperate,Aronovitz said he expects Evans to fire the veteran police chief.
Headley, as department head, is directly responsible to the city manager. Evans serves at the will of the commission. Both Evans and Headley are due to return from vacation next week. In a strongly-worded, five-page statement of policy to City Attorney J.W. Watson, Aronovitz said in part: “I firmly believe it is a disgrace to Miami to have a place on Biscayne Boulevard whose business caters to the distorted mind which seeing a bunch of fairies perform where the sky seems the limit.
“No “Harassment”
“I do not wish to join in any movement to harass anyone who is sick of mind, but neither do I wish to permit conditions to exist in the Miami area so that perverts, fairies and a conglomeration of maladjusted crackpots may be attracted here.” The mayor blasted Headley for his refusal to crack down on bars and restaurants where perverts congregate. He urged City Attorney Watson to draft an ordinance which would terms for bar owners to homosexuals. He also asked Watson to take appropriate state action aimed at depriving such bar owners of beverage licenses.Police Chief Headley’s announced policy on homosexuals is to allow them to gather in certain bars and thereby keep from scattering them to all parts of the city.
“Condition -“Blatant”
“I will not accept the excuse that these things are on a sneak basis,” said Aronovitz. “It is not – it is blatant, open. “Within one week after the city manager’s return, if he fails to obtain in writing from the chief of police that his previous policy of allowing perverts and fairies to congregate in certain bars is changed; or if the city manager fails to bring charges to remove the chief of police, then, under such circumstances, I’ shall introduce a resolution asking the removal of the city manager.” Aronovitz said he had kept Evans’ job for him in the past by refusing to go along with two other commissioners who wanted to fire him. “The responsibility for action is clear,” said Aronovitz. “The entire matter rests squarely in the hands of the city manager now.”
