Deviates’ Hangout And Bookies Raided
Rug Pulled from Red Carpet

The Red Carpet Lounge, 1610 Alton Rd., Miami Beach, a notorious homosexual hangout, has had the rug pulled from under it by sheriff’s deputies. Pressing a recently stepped-up campaign against “pervert palaces, deputies raided the club last night. Earlier they smashed two Miami horse-betting parlors. Patrons mostly male at the Red Carpet were caught unawares when the raiders under Deputy Joe Gorman swept into the club and cleaned it out, arresting 35 men on charges of vagrancy, The night spot is the former Club Benni, a popular gathering spot for deviates now under new management.
Manager Nabbed
Also nabbed in the vice net was manager Robert Shulman, charged with selling alcoholic drinks Shulman minoritied some extra excitement to the raid when he smashed a television cameraman’s flashbulb with a broken whisky glass. The cameraman, Dick Pitschke, 24, of WTVJ, said he would confer with his employers about the possibility of filing charges of assault against the club operator. “I was wrong,” Shulman commented after cooling off, “but I’ve got two kids and I try to raise them’ right – I just didn’t want my picture taken.’ The club was the third meeting place for homosexuals raided by deputies in the last two weeks.
Bookie Crackdowns
In the separate bookie crackdowns, deputies accompanied by state agents smashed the doors of two Miami homes serving as bookie joints. Arrested at 2291 NW 20th St., were two faces familiar to horse bettors, Harry Katz, 60, and Isadore Beck, 51. Picked up at an apartment at 652 NE 63rd St. was former Miami policeman Elum A. Caudell. All were held on gambling charges. Ernest Darnell, 62, owner of the house used by Katz and Beck, was charged conspiracy to violate gambling with, laws. In on the two raids were Investigator Ed McCollum and John Reed, Miami agent for the attorney general, and Deputies Bob Scharlau and Jack Sandstrom.
Slips Recovered Katz and Beck were thwarted in an attempt to destroy evidence when raiders grabbed a waste basket and dousflaming, a bathroom sink. Betting slips and tally sheets were found in the house. It was the second time the two men had been arrested on bookmaking charges since Feb. 5. Darnell told investigators he was unaware that gambling was being carried on in his house.
